Description

Black-and-white photo of Hoboken firemen outside the burnt-out tenement at 121 Clinton Street, Hoboken, January 21, 1979.

8" x 10" high modern copy print. Photographer not indicated. Reverse has ink note: Hoboken, N.J. Tenement Fire 21 Killed 1979.

The fire took place on January 20th (see photo 2013.001.0068 for another view that taken at night on that day when the fire was fully engaged.)

The event was the worst example of a building being destroyed by suspected arson-for-profit in Hoboken during a period when such fires were all too frequent. Although arson was suspected and investigated, no one was ever charged with a crime related to it. The death toll of twenty one included several children.
