    Chronology 1898-2024

Detailed chronology of the period 1898 to 2024, from primary and secondary resources.  Some years are incomplete.

The chronology begins with the United States possession and colonization of Puerto Rico following the Spanish American War in 1898.

Puerto Rico was first claimed as a colony by Spain following Christopher Columbus' visit in 1493.  Columbus and other Europeans were met by the Taino peoples, the pre-Hispanic, Native American, indigenous culture occupying the island.  The history of the Taino is not discussed in this chronology, nor is that of Spain.

    Music

This is a continued area of interest and needs further development.  However, we've cobbled together some exciting information about early 20th century ethnographic recordings and late 20th century record label, W.G. International Records, Inc., that needs to be shared.  We'll continue to research music and come back to it in the future and flesh it out further.

The Library of Congress has a resource on Puerto Rican music you can view here.
